Scar Release Therapy

Helping your scar feel—and move—better.

Scar Release Therapy

What is Scar Release Therapy?

Scar release therapy is a technique used to soften tight or sensitive scar tissue and improve how the deeper layers of your body move and feel. While scars often look healed on the outside, the tissue underneath can become stiff, stuck, or irritated — especially after a C-section, episiotomy or any post-surgical scar.

By focusing on these underneath layers, we can help the scar move more freely, calm irritated nerves and reduce tension that can affect your core, pelvic floor and overall everyday comfort.

At Markham Pelvic Health, we often use Microcurrent Point Stimulation (MPS) — a gentle electrical current applied with a handheld device (the Dolphin Stim). It feels like light pressure or soft tapping on the skin and is completely non-invasive. Microcurrent helps:

  • Loosen adhesions and stiffness under the scar
  • Improve circulation and tissue mobility
  • Reduce nerve irritation or burning sensitivity
  • Soften the “pulling” or “tight” feeling many people notice around scars
  • Support better movement and pelvic floor function

Scar-release therapy is quick, comfortable, and easy to include within your pelvic physio treatment. It won’t remove the scar, but it can make a meaningful difference in how your body feels and functions.

Can it improve my Scar’s appearance?

Scar-release therapy can’t erase a scar, but it can help improve how it looks and feels over time. When scar tissue is tight, raised, or lumpy, it often means the deeper layers are stiff or not moving well. By gently softening those layers and improving circulation, the scar can become:

  • Flatter and less raised
  • Softer and more flexible
  • Less rigid or “ropey”
  • More blended with the surrounding tissue
  • Less red or irritated (as blood flow normalizes)

This happens because microcurrent helps the tissue reorganize itself and encourages healthier collagen alignment. Some early studies even show visible changes on ultrasound after just one session of microcurrent scar-release — suggesting the deeper tissue softens and becomes less dense.

Results vary from person to person, and the goal is always function first, but many clients notice that after treatment:

  • Their scar looks smoother
  • The colour evens out
  • The texture feels more natural
  • The scar area moves more easily with the rest of their body

So while the intention of scar-release therapy is to improve comfort, mobility, and pelvic function, improved appearance is often a welcome added benefit.

What the Research Tells us

Researchers studied 47 women with persistent C-section scar pain. After one microcurrent scar-release session, pain levels dropped by roughly two-thirds immediately, and by about 80% within two days.” – View the Study

Early clinical experience with microcurrent scar-release therapy (like the Dolphin Stim) shows promising results. Many women with long-standing C-section scar pain report noticeable relief after treatment. In some cases, ultrasound images even showed a visible reduction in thick, tight scar tissue after just one short session – View the Study

It’s important to note that large-scale clinical trials are still pending. That means we use the Dolphin Stim as part of a complete pelvic health plan — scar release, manual therapy, movement and functional strengthening — rather than as a solo “fix.”

In a study of 47 women with ongoing C-section scar pain, one microcurrent treatment reduced pain by about two-thirds right away.

The same group experienced about an 80% reduction in pain within the first two days after treatment.

What does it feel like?

Everyone’s scar is different and we all have different sensitivity levels. But many clients have described treatment like:

  • A light tapping or soft pressure on the skin
  • A sensation similar to a gentle “click” or pulse from the device
  • No needles, no heat, and no intense stimulation
  • A feeling of the tissue slowly “letting go” as the area relaxes
  • For some, a warm or slightly tingly sensation as circulation improves
  • Many people describe it as odd at first, but never painful

If your scar is extra sensitive, you may feel mild discomfort for a second or two, but it typically eases quickly as the tissue relaxes. Most clients are surprised by how easy the process feels—and many notice immediate changes in softness, mobility, or tension around the scar.

Is there an Additional Cost?

Not at all. If you’re already a client, just let your therapist know you’d like to include it in your next treatment. If you’re new and specifically interested in scar-release therapy, simply book a Scar Release Assessment for your first visit.

If your scar feels tight, sensitive, or like it’s holding you back, you don’t have to just live with it. Gentle scar-release therapy can help your body move more freely, reduce discomfort, and support your overall pelvic health. Whether your scar is new or years old, we’re here to help you feel more at ease in your own body.
