If your child struggles with bedwetting, constipation, or bladder leaks, you’re not alone — and there is effective help we can provide if you are here in Markham, Toronto and beyond.

At Markham Pelvic Health, we specialize in pediatric pelvic floor physiotherapy — evidence-based care that helps kids build comfort, confidence, and control.

Our experienced physiotherapists are parents too, so they know what techniques are effective when teaching children how their bladder and bowel work.

Common Bladder and Bowel Problems we help in kids

Many parents bring their children in for:

  • Bedwetting (nighttime accidents)
  • Daytime urinary leaks, frequency, or urgency
  • Constipation or stool withholding
  • Fecal soiling (“skid marks”)
  • Painful or difficult toileting
  • Recurrent urinary tract infections
  • Bladder and bowel issues linked to sensory or developmental differences

These are common, treatable issues — not bad habits.
With the right support, your child can regain comfort and confidence.

How Pediatric Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy Helps Children

Pelvic floor physiotherapy teaches kids to coordinate the muscles that control peeing and pooping — through simple movements, breathing, and body awareness.

At Markham Pelvic Health, we make learning fun and stress-free.
Our approach helps children:

  • Recognize when they need to go
  • Relax or strengthen their pelvic muscles
  • Improve posture and breathing for easier toileting
  • Create healthy hydration and bathroom routines
  • Feel in control of their bodies — and proud of their progress

All sessions are non-invasive, calm, and supportive.

What Parents Can Expect at Their Child’s Appointment

Your child’s first visit focuses on comfort, understanding, and trust.

Here’s what happens:

  1. You and your child meet your physiotherapist in a relaxed, private room.
  2. We chat about symptoms, routines, and goals.
  3. We observe posture, breathing, and coordination — no pain, no embarrassment.
  4. Together, we build a clear plan for home and clinic success.

💡 We never perform internal exams on children.
Everything is explained in language your child can understand.

Follow-up visits focus on progress, confidence, and education — often with games, visuals, and positive reinforcement.

When should I be concerned about my child’s bedwetting?

Every child is different, but if your child is still having daytime accidents after age 5 or wetting the bed at night past age 7, it’s a good idea to talk with your healthcare provider.

Learning to use the toilet and stay dry is a gradual part of toileting readiness and continence development. Every child progresses at their own pace, and gentle guidance from parents can make the process smoother and more positive. Encouraging routines, celebrating small successes, and using supportive strategies—like a footstool for proper posture, calm “belly breathing,” and praise for effort—help children gain confidence and body awareness. These simple steps promote healthy bladder and bowel habits and support long-term pediatric pelvic health in a calm, reassuring way.

Pediatrics Continence Timeline

While every child develops at their own pace, most children achieve daytime dryness by around 3½ years and nighttime dryness by about 4 years. If your child is still experiencing daytime accidents at age 5, it may be helpful to speak with a healthcare professional for guidance and support.

How Does Physiotherapy Help with Bladder or Bowel Problems?2025-10-15T14:32:14-04:00

Many children’s bladder and bowel issues are caused by muscle coordination difficulties — they may tighten when they should relax.
Through education, exercises, and biofeedback, physiotherapy teaches the body to regain control, improves posture and breathing, and reduces anxiety around toileting.

Will my child need to undress or be touched?2025-10-15T14:30:24-04:00

Assessments are always age-appropriate and based on your child’s comfort. Most evaluations are external and focus on observing movement, breathing, and posture.
We never perform internal exams on children. Everything is explained beforehand and done with the full consent of parents.

What Happens During the First Appointment?2025-10-15T14:28:19-04:00

The first session includes:

  • A relaxed conversation about your child’s bladder, bowel, and toileting habits

  • Review of medical history and daily routines

  • Gentle physical assessment (external only) to look at posture, breathing, and muscle coordination

  • Education for both child and parent on how the pelvic floor works

  • A clear, step-by-step home program

Our goal is to make every visit comfortable, fun, and empowering.

What Conditions Do You Treat?2025-10-15T14:22:45-04:00

  • Constipation and painful bowel movements
