Our Postpartum Recovery Program at Markham Pelvic Health
Begin with an Assessment
Our initial assessments are 60 minutes long for all clients. There is usually a lot to cover on the first day. Here is what we typically try to accomplish in our first session together:
- Postpartum Assessment
- After a vaginal birth, we look at how well your pelvic floor muscles are healing and working. This includes checking strength, coordination, scar tissue from stitches, and the support of the bladder, uterus, and rectum. We also assess for pain, leaking, prolapse symptoms, and abdominal changes like diastasis recti.
- After a C-section, we focus on scar healing, mobility, and core strength. Even without a vaginal delivery, pregnancy still impacts the pelvic floor, so we check how those muscles are functioning, too. We also look at posture, movement, and any issues with bladder or bowel function.
- Treatment & Education
- We’ll start treatment and take time to explain any conditions identified during your assessment. Together, we’ll review which activities are safe, what might slow your recovery, and how you can return to the things you love, feeling confident and supported.
-
Establish Your Postpartum Goals
- We’ll help you focus on the activities that matter most to you. Whether that’s getting back to the gym, feeling comfortable with intimacy again, or preparing your body for a future pregnancy, setting clear goals helps us create the best plan to get you there.
-
Treatment Planning
- By planning your treatment together, we’ll set a clear path forward so you can confidently reach your postpartum goals.
Treatment
Treatments are typically 30 minutes long, weekly. But this can vary depending on your specific clinical case.
- Manual Therapy
- We’ll continue with manual therapy (to the muscles, joints, scar tissue, nerves, and connective tissue) and build on your progress, guided by your body’s feedback.
- Progress Tracking & Fine Tuning
- We’ll review and track the progress you’ve made on your prescribed exercises
-
We will check how your symptoms are changing — whether things are getting better or worse.
-
Together, we will adapt the plan, either stepping up or easing back, depending on how your body reacts.
Clinical Support
We are committed to your long-term recovery at Markham Pelvic Health. Sometimes, this means changing gears and trying something different and leveraging the team’s expertise.
- Adjusting the Plan
- If you’re feeling mostly better but can’t quite get over the last hurdle, we’ll step back, readjust, and refine your treatment so you can cross the finish line.
- Case Reviews
- At Markham Pelvic Health, we conduct periodic clinical case reviews with our team. This gives patients the benefit of our collective expertise. We typically do this for:
- Highly complex medical history

Pelvic or vaginal heaviness (prolapse)
-
Pain with sex or pelvic discomfort
-
Diastasis recti (abdominal separation)

If you’re unsure, we can help assess what’s going on and guide you to the right treatment plan.
Your first session is gentle, private, and focused on understanding your body’s recovery. We’ll talk through your delivery, symptoms, and goals, then assess your posture, breathing, core, and pelvic floor function.
If an internal exam is appropriate, we’ll explain everything and get your consent — it’s always your choice.
You can book a postpartum pelvic floor assessment as soon as you feel ready — typically after your 6-week checkup, or earlier if cleared by your provider. Our physiotherapists work with women who delivered vaginally or by C-section to help you recover safely and confidently.
Every person’s timeline is different, but most notice improvement within 3–6 sessions. Consistency with your home exercises and daily habits makes a big difference. Your therapist will check in regularly to track your progress and adjust your plan as your strength and confidence grow.
No referral is needed. You can book directly with our registered pelvic floor physiotherapists. However, if you have extended health coverage, some insurance plans require a referral for reimbursement — check your plan details.
